The church is the second built on this site, the She Shan Hill, by Jesuits, and it was completed in 1873. This building was demolished c.1925 and replaced with the She Shan Basilica, which still stands (Huanshan Road).

The building on the left in this crop, is the Oriental Bank (a new premises, built in 1869). Photograph taken prior to trees growing near where the pony and cart (with a foreign boy passenger) are standing. Photograph taken prior to embankment of the Bund (1886). So approximate date: 1869 - early 1870s.

The Public Garden is newly laid out, including the first bandstand, which was built in 1868. This bandstand is not to be seen in photographs taken after 1874. The round topped pier in Quai de France (on the left of this crop) is discussed in "Old Shanghai's Bund" by Dennis George Crow (page 27) - this pier dates HD-s26 to the late 1860s to early 1870s. The ship with a funnel is identifiable as one of the three initial China Navigation Co (Swire) Yangtse river steamers built by A & J Inglis at Glasgow – and has been identified as the ‘Pekin’, which first arrived in Shanghai in July 1873 (Source: Stephen Kentwell).

The date in the caption is certainly incorrect: the Scots Guards arrived in Shanghai on 2 July 1928 and were based there until 20 January 1929 as part the British Shanghai Defence Force'. On both days, and on a number of occasions in between, they paraded along the Nanjing Road (where they are shown in this photograph).
